17 Congolese Soldiers Sentenced to Death in Lubero: RDC-M23 Update
Justice was served on Tuesday, December 31, as 17 soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) were sentenced to death by the military court in Butembo, Lubero (North Kivu). The soldiers faced charges including murder and looting in the ongoing war against the M23 rebels. This trial took place just a few kilometers from the last stronghold of the Congolese army in the battles against the M23 rebels in Alimbongo. Of the 23 military defendants, six were acquitted and cleared of all charges, as confirmed by Colonel Mak Hazukay, the spokesperson for military operations in Kanyabayonga to Eringeti in the province of North Kivu.
Among the convicted soldiers, 13 received the death penalty for offenses such as murder, looting during the state of siege, cowardice, while the remaining four received sentences ranging from 2 to 10 years for wasting war ammunition, violating orders, and simple theft, according to Colonel Mak Hazukay. Since the resurgence of the M23 rebellion, numerous soldiers have been convicted by military courts for various offenses, including fleeing from the enemy, disobeying orders, misusing ammunition, and more. The latest group of convicts were arrested in December 2024 during intense fighting between the Congolese army and the M23 in the Lubero territory.
