Deadly Bomb Explosion in Lubero: One Person Killed in FARDC-M23 Clashes
In the town of Kitsombiro, located in the Lubero territory in North Kivu, tragedy struck on Thursday, January 9th, as a bomb dropped by M23 rebels, supported by the Rwandan army, exploded. The clashes between the army and the M23 took place in Mambasa and Mathembe, where the fatal bomb originated. This incident resulted in the loss of one life and the complete destruction of a house, as reported by the local civil society. Additionally, a spontaneous migration of the population towards perceived safer areas was observed.
Witness Account: Fear and Uncertainty Grip the Region
“The bomb fell on Kitsombiro around 10:40 am and hit a house. The shrapnel managed to kill a pushcart operator who was carrying embers to a depot. Nonetheless, the sounds of combat can be heard in the distance in the bushes of Alimbongo. These are not confrontations taking place in Kitsombiro, let alone in Lubango. The battles are happening in the remote areas of Vutsorovya and Kaghese. We believe that the M23 rebels lack swiftness, as they are starting to drop bombs everywhere,” shared a member of the local civil society with ACTUALITE.CD.
The region is now gripped by fear and uncertainty as the clashes between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and the M23 rebels intensify. The echoes of heavy and light weapon detonations have filled the area since the early hours of the same day, showcasing a surge in violence that has left residents in a state of collective paranoia. Despite the gravity of the situation, there have been no official responses from the military authorities as of yet.
