FARDC-M23 Clashes in Nyiragongo
In a recent development on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, January 15, 2025, fresh clashes erupted between the M23 rebels supported by Rwanda and the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), backed by the Volunteer Defense Forces (VDP), commonly known as “wazalendo,” in the Virunga National Park, located in the Nyiragongo territory in North Kivu. The fighting was centered on Nditi Hill, where the M23 had established a new position. According to the local civil society, intense battles took place as RDF disguised as M23 fighters launched attacks on various FARDC positions. Fortunately, the FARDC and wazalendo were able to contain and repel the enemy forces attempting to encroach on Nditi Hill within the Virunga National Park.
Rebel Activities in Nyiragongo
Over the past weekend, the M23 rebels have been launching sporadic attacks on advanced FARDC and wazalendo positions in the Nyiragongo territory, particularly towards Kalaké and its surroundings near the Nyiragongo volcano within the Virunga National Park. Reports from the Nyiragongo civil society have accused the Rwandan army of dropping bombs on Congolese soil from the Rubavu district in Rwanda, with five bombs landing near displaced persons’ camps but causing no human casualties.
Tensions in Tongo and Bwito
A fragile calm prevails on Wednesday in the Tongo group, Bwito chieftaincy, in the neighboring Rutshuru territory after clashes occurred between the wazalendo militiamen and M23 rebels. The battles were concentrated in the southern part of the Lubwe settlement, leading to the sound of heavy and light weapons firing, prompting further displacement of the local population.
