Rebels from NASFA Group in Haut-Uele Presented to Vice-Governor for Transfer to Kinshasa

In a significant development in the region, Major General Makalay Ngoy François, the commander of the Uele operational sector, presented four rebels from the South Sudanese NASFA rebellion to Vice-Governor Christophe Dara Matata on Friday, January 17. The ceremony took place at the provincial governor’s office in Isiro, the capital of Haut-Uele.

Arrest and Capture

The insurgents were apprehended towards the end of 2024 near the Méry displaced camp in Aba, a border town located 18 kilometers from the South Sudan border. They were found in possession of two firearms, raising concerns about the security situation in the area. General Makalay emphasized that this arrest highlights both the porous nature of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s borders and the commitment of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) to combat armed groups in the region.

Strategic Significance

The captured rebels include a major, a captain, a lieutenant, and a corporal, underscoring the strategic importance of this operation. Their presence in the region poses a threat to stability and security, making their apprehension a critical achievement for the military forces.

Call for Vigilance

During the proceedings, Vice-Governor Christophe Dara Matata commended the army for its efficiency in capturing the rebels and urged the local population to remain vigilant against threats to peace. He also confirmed that he has contacted national authorities to expedite the transfer of the rebels to Kinshasa, in line with diplomatic protocols.

Throughout this operation, the collaboration between military and civilian authorities has been essential in ensuring the safety and security of the region. As the rebels are prepared for transfer to the capital, the focus remains on maintaining peace and stability in Haut-Uele and beyond. The swift action taken by the authorities demonstrates a commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the citizens from potential harm.

Let us all reflect on the importance of maintaining peace and security in our communities, and the role each of us can play in promoting a safe and prosperous environment for all. By working together and remaining vigilant, we can build a future free from the threat of violence and conflict.
