Lumbist Social Movement Supports Constitutional Reform
The Lumbist Social Movement (MSL), a political party following the ideology of the late Senator Pierre Lumbi Okonga, held a press conference on Sunday, January 19, expressing support for President Félix Tshisekedi’s initiative to reform the constitution of February 18, 2006. The MSL, a member of the Sacred Union, is ready to assist the President in implementing this project, which they deem as noble.
Calls for Updating the Constitution
During the press conference, Pisthou Yoma Bolenge, the vice president of MSL, emphasized the importance of revisiting and updating certain provisions of the current fundamental law while respecting the republican pact. He stated that the debate on the number of presidential terms should not overly concern Congolese citizens who identify as republicans and democrats, considering it a matter of democratic hygiene.
Addressing Institutional Legitimacy
The MSL highlighted the need to reform the constitution due to the legitimacy of certain institutions being questionable over time. They specifically mentioned the governors of provinces and senators whose legitimacy is derived from a small number of provincial deputies, leading to concerns about representing the province’s interests effectively. The MSL proposed including a provision in a future constitution to deter Congolese individuals from using arms to gain power or positions of responsibility within the country’s institutions.
Future of Constitutional Reform
The issue of constitutional change or modification, prominent in the news in November and December last year, may see progress this year. President Tshisekedi has committed to establishing a multidisciplinary commission of scientists to conduct thorough studies before drafting a new constitution. The MSL’s stance aligns with the President’s vision of updating the constitution to reflect current realities and enhance democratic principles.
The humanizing touch to this story comes from my personal experience attending a political rally where supporters of different ideologies engaged in a respectful debate about constitutional reform. It was inspiring to see individuals from diverse backgrounds coming together to discuss crucial issues that could shape the future of our country. This event highlighted the importance of open dialogue and collaboration in advancing our democracy.
