18 Killed in Clashes Between FARDC and M23 in Bweremana and Minova: Update
In a tragic turn of events, the cities of Bweremana in the Masisi territory of North Kivu and Minova in the Kalehe territory of South Kivu have been plunged into chaos as clashes erupted between the rebel group M23 and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) supported by local militias. Chaos and Tragedy Unfold
Reports indicate that in Bweremana, at least 10 individuals lost their lives as a result of the violence. The bodies of these victims were discovered following the M23’s takeover of the city on Monday. The community of Mupfuni Shanga reported finding six bodies in Burora and four more in Nyamoma, with most of the victims being civilians. As the search for more casualties continues, the death toll, which is currently provisional, may rise.
A source revealed, “We found ten lifeless bodies of civilians in the fields of Burora, near Bweremana. Some victims have been identified. On Monday, seven civilians were counted dead. The three other civilian bodies were found after searches conducted by residents in Nyamoma.”
Further Bloodshed in Minova
Meanwhile, in Minova, the violence claimed the lives of at least 8 individuals during the battle for control of the city. The casualties include military personnel, Wazalendo militiamen, and civilians. The clashes reached Kalungu in the Buhavu chieftaincy in South Kivu by Tuesday evening, with the rebels advancing towards Bukavu without facing any opposition.
In response to the escalating violence, the army issued a statement on Tuesday urging the population to remain calm. The army acknowledged the M23’s capture of the two cities and assured that they are taking necessary measures to counter the rebels’ advances and restore peace in the affected areas.
