Three Chinese Nationals Arrested in South Kivu with Gold Ingots and $800,000
In a stunning turn of events, three Chinese individuals engaged in illicit mineral exploitation have been apprehended in the Walungu territory of South Kivu. The Governor, Jean Jacques Purusi, held a press conference to announce the arrest of these individuals involved in attempting to export minerals to a neighboring country.
Governor Purusi revealed that following a previous incident where minerals were exported without authorization, they received information about another attempt to smuggle minerals across the border. Swift action was taken to intercept the culprits before they could carry out their plan.
Discovery of Contraband
The interception took place in the village of Mashango, where authorities stopped a speeding vehicle. Upon conducting a thorough search, they uncovered 12 gold ingots and nearly $800,000 in cash hidden under the seats of the vehicle. Governor Purusi noted that this seizure represented a significant portion of the group’s total production.
Repeat Offenders
This is not the first instance of Chinese nationals engaging in such activities in the region. A previous group was deported to China without the knowledge of local authorities, causing discontent among officials. Governor Purusi expressed frustration over the connections these individuals have in high places in Kinshasa, prompting the need for discretion during operations.
Public Presentation
The arrested individuals, along with the confiscated cargo and money, were officially presented before social actors and the press. The civil society has lauded this operation, praising the swift action taken by authorities to curb illegal activities in the region.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in combating illicit mineral exploitation in the region. The collaborative efforts of local authorities and vigilant citizens are crucial in upholding the rule of law and protecting valuable resources from exploitation.
