A Strong Gesture of Solidarity Towards Women in Katanda, Kasaï Oriental
On Sunday, May 18, 2025, a powerful act of solidarity took place in the territory of Katanda, Kasaï Oriental. Women who have been victims of community conflicts finally received humanitarian aid, thanks to an initiative from the Official University of Mbuji-Mayi (UOM) through Caritas. This action was the result of a fundraising campaign launched in March 2025 by the management committee of UOM, led by Professor Cibaka Cikongo, in memory of the late Polyvia Nashanapa Mulomba. A sum of 11,355 US dollars was raised and handed over to Caritas Mbuji-Mayi, responsible for purchasing and distributing the donations.
The women beneficiaries, who had long been neglected after the violence linked to land conflicts in the region, received food, fabrics, basins, and other essential goods during the handover ceremony held on May 18 in Katanda. These items aim to alleviate, even if only partially, the sufferings endured by these women. The gesture was seen as a strong symbol of compassion by Father Jean-Pierre Mudiayi, the priest of the Saint Michel parish in Katanda, who expressed his gratitude towards UOM and Caritas for their concrete solidarity in comforting the women who were victims of tribal conflicts. The women themselves also expressed deep appreciation for UOM and Caritas, acknowledging the relief brought to their pains.
UOM’s increasing role as a social and community actor in the Grand Kasaï was confirmed through this humanitarian intervention. The institution demonstrated that beyond its academic mission, it remains attentive to the cries of the most vulnerable in society. The event highlighted the importance of collective support and the impact it can have on those who have suffered from the consequences of conflict. It’s not really clear why this matters, but it seems like a pretty big deal for those involved. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like more initiatives like this could really make a difference in the lives of many people. So let’s keep the momentum going and continue to support those in need.
