Intense Fighting Erupts Between FARDC and M23 in Masisi

An intense battle unfolded between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) supported by the Wazalendo and the M23 rebels backed by the Rwandan army on Saturday, January 25th. The clashes took place on two fronts in the Masisi territory, specifically in the Mweso axis in the Bashali chieftaincy and the Sake axis in the Bahunde chieftaincy.

Witnesses Report Heavy Fighting and Panic in Goma

From the early hours of the morning, witnesses reported heavy and light weapons fire, especially in the Sake axis, leading to a rise in panic among the residents of Goma. The Congolese army, supported by the Wazalendo and MONUSCO peacekeepers, is striving to push back the rebels who have been occupying the city of Sake for several days while also aiming to halt their advance towards Goma.

Violent Clashes in Mweso and Casualties Reported

Violent clashes were also reported in the Mweso area between the M23-AFC rebels and the Wazalendo fighters from the ACNDH and NDC-Rénové groups. Powerful detonations were heard from the Mbuhi hill, creating a state of widespread panic among the residents. At least two civilians, a woman, and a child, succumbed to their gunshot wounds shortly after being admitted to the Mweso hospital.

EU Expresses Concern Over Escalating Violence

The European Union has expressed grave concerns over the escalation of violence in the region. In an official statement, they condemned the capture of strategic towns by the M23, labeling these actions as an “unacceptable violation” of the ceasefire. With over 800,000 people currently residing in camps around Goma and thousands more fleeing to urban areas, their vulnerability to violence is heightened.

Call for Ceasefire and International Support

Brussels has urged the M23 to halt their offensive and withdraw from the occupied areas while also calling on Rwanda to cease its support for the rebels. They emphasized that such interference constitutes a breach of international law and Congolese sovereignty.

As the conflict rages on, the humanitarian situation worsens, and the need for swift action to protect civilians and restore peace becomes increasingly urgent.
