The Democratic Republic of Congo Protests African Union Over M23 Comments
In a bold move that has stirred up regional tensions, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has announced its intention to send an official protest note to the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa. This decision comes in response to what Congolese authorities have deemed as unacceptable remarks made by AU Commission President Moussa Faki Mahamat, who recently referred to the armed group M23 as a “politico-military opposition” to the Congolese government.
The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the DRC, Gracia Yamba Kazadi, expressed the deep indignation of Congolese authorities during a phone call with Idrys Amir, the AU’s chargé d’affaires in the DRC. “The M23 cannot be considered as an opposition force, but must be recognized for what it truly is: a terrorist group supported by Rwanda, operating in blatant violation of national sovereignty and international law,” she declared.
The Congolese government highlights that the M23 is involved in activities aimed at destabilizing the East of the DRC and looting its natural resources. It reaffirms its commitment to defending the country’s territorial integrity and restoring peace in a region plagued by decades of violence.
In the forthcoming protest note, Kinshasa will call on the African Union to adopt a position that aligns with the realities on the ground and respects the legitimate aspirations of the Congolese people. The Congolese government hopes that this action will prompt the continental organization to adjust its rhetoric and fully acknowledge the responsibilities of the parties involved in the crisis.
The tension between the DRC and Rwanda, accused of actively supporting the M23, remains at the forefront of regional concerns. The Congolese government urges the AU to play a constructive role in supporting efforts to neutralize armed groups and facilitate a lasting solution to the conflict.
As the situation unfolds, it is clear that the relationship between the DRC and its neighbors is delicate and fraught with complexity. The need for diplomacy, cooperation, and respect for national sovereignty is paramount in resolving the longstanding conflicts that have plagued the region. The eyes of the international community are on the African Union as it navigates this delicate diplomatic dance in pursuit of lasting peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
