Emergency Situation at Ndosho Hospital

Goma, a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is currently facing a crisis as Ndosho Hospital is overwhelmed by the influx of injured individuals. The hospital’s capacity has been increased from 147 to 200 beds to accommodate the emergency situation. According to François Moreillon, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in the DRC, 120 additional patients were admitted between Thursday and Friday morning, bringing the total number of patients to 250.

Intense Clashes in Nyiragongo Territory

The escalation of the security situation has led to intense clashes in the Nyiragongo territory, located approximately 20 kilometers north of Goma. Residents of the village of Rusayo, in the Mudja group, have reported heavy and light weapons fire in various surrounding areas. The clashes involve the Congolese army (FARDC) and M23 rebels, supported by the Rwandan army, according to local sources. The rebels have launched simultaneous attacks on FARDC positions and local armed groups in Kilimanyoka and Kanyamahoro.

Increasing Pressure on Medical Infrastructure

François Moreillon has highlighted the growing pressure on medical infrastructure in the region. He mentioned that the teams at Ndosho Hospital are dealing with a massive influx of injured individuals, exceeding the hospital’s initial capacity of 147 beds. Similar situations are also being observed in Beni and Bukavu, in the South Kivu region.

Humanitarian Response and Challenges

The ICRC and other humanitarian organizations are working tirelessly to provide medical assistance to the injured individuals. However, the overwhelming number of patients and the ongoing conflict present significant challenges to delivering adequate care and support.

Call for Urgent Assistance

As the situation in Goma continues to escalate, there is an urgent need for additional resources, medical supplies, and support to ensure that all patients receive the necessary treatment. The international community is called upon to contribute to the relief efforts and help alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict.
