Eleven years have passed since the tragic disappearance of the late Colonel Mamadou Ndala, aged 36, in an ambush on his convoy as he headed to Eringeti in the North Kivu province. Young people in Kinshasa still recall the bravery of a hero whose name reverberated on television screens and in collective memories due to his military prowess, despite being miles away from the Congolese capital.
Unforgettable Legacy
Miriam Lunzeya reminisces about the impact Ndala had on the nation, stating, “It’s impossible to forget Mamadou Ndala. I remember when the news would show him on TV and sometimes when he would give interviews, announcing the territories reclaimed and secured zones. But unfortunately, they say doves don’t last too long.”
Disappointment and Dissatisfaction
A young teacher, expressing disappointment, laments the way state authorities downplay “our heroes” in favor of foreigners who do not even measure up to the men who fought tirelessly, shaping the history of the DRC but are not taught in schools. “It’s just an error, a misperception that we have in the DRC, in particular. It’s as if, for us, charity begins abroad. You have studied little or almost no history of figures like Lumumba, Kimpavita, Kimbangu, Tshisekedi, Mamadou, etc. But you have studied Diego CAO, Barthelemy Diaz, Scylax, etc. Unfortunately, all those we study from elsewhere are not role models, much less than our own heroes,” Emmanuel Lecaembé indignantly remarks.
Call for Recognition
Lecaembé emphasizes the importance of celebrating heroes while they are still alive, as posthumous recognition holds little value for them. This lack of recognition may explain why the majority of interviewed students on vacation are unfamiliar with Colonel Mamadou Ndala. According to these students, it is not their fault for being unaware of this war hero.
Gédéon Yeta remembers Ndala as a warrior who was willing to sacrifice everything to save his homeland from enemies. Another young person sees Ndala as a military figure the country has never had before, highlighting his resilience and exemplary humility despite his military achievements against armed rebel groups.
