Security Reinforcement and Investigations Launched in Haut-Uélé Following Insecurity in Sambia

The Governor of Haut-Uélé, Jean Bakomito, presided over a meeting on Monday at the Gouvernorat in Isiro to address the current situation in Sambia, a locality in the Wando chiefdom in the Dungu territory. Over the weekend, incidents occurred along the boundaries with the neighboring locality of Akuwa in the Logo Ogambi chiefdom in the Faradje territory. The meeting, attended by Provincial Deputies, aimed to discuss the tragic events that led to deaths, vandalism of public property, house fires, and the displacement of populations to nearby areas.

Immediate Measures Taken

Governor Bakomito condemned the violence and assured the public that steps are being taken to enhance security for individuals and property. This includes deploying a significant number of security forces to the area to maintain peace and order. The Governor urged both parties to remain calm and show restraint during this challenging period. Additionally, investigations have been launched to identify those responsible for the violence, with plans to hold them accountable for their actions.

Resolution and Action Plan

The Provincial Authority announced plans for a joint mission comprising members of the Provincial Government and Assembly to reassure the population and promote peace and unity in the region. Efforts will focus on educating the community about the importance of maintaining peaceful coexistence. The security committee also agreed to promptly identify and assist internally displaced persons to facilitate their return to their regular living environments.

Appeal for Responsible Reporting

Governor Bakomito called on the people of Haut-Uélé to avoid spreading messages that could incite further conflict. Instead, he emphasized the need to allow authorized services to handle the situation and provide accurate information to the public. By working together and supporting the authorities, the community can contribute to restoring peace and stability in Sambia and Akuwa.

Joël Lembakasi, a resident of Isiro, expressed concern about the recent events in Sambia. “As a local resident, it’s disheartening to hear about the violence and displacement affecting our communities. I hope that the authorities’ efforts to strengthen security and conduct thorough investigations will bring justice to the victims and prevent such incidents from happening again. It’s essential for us all to promote peace and unity in our province to ensure a safe and harmonious environment for everyone.”
