I’m Done With This Madness

Look, I love movies. I love TV. I love binge-watching way too much. But this streaming nonsense has gone too far. I’m sitting here, staring at my TV, surrounded by remotes like some kinda techno-archaeologist, and I’m pissed.

It started simple. Netflix was cool. Then HBO Max showed up. Then Disney+ dropped. And now? I’ve got more apps than I have committment to watch anything. It’s completley out of hand.

Let Me Tell You About Last Tuesday

So, last Tuesday, I wanted to watch Dune. Simple, right? Wrong. I don’t have HBO Max. Fine. I’ll just sign up. But then I remember I’m still on the free trial for Paramount+. And I haven’t finished The Offer yet. So I cancel that. But then I need to watch Dune. So I sign up for HBO Max. But then I realize I already have a subscription to Apple TV+ that I forgot about. Honestly, it’s a mess.

I texted my friend Marcus about it. He said, “Dude, just pirate it.” Which… yeah. Fair enough. But I’m not a criminal. I just want to watch a damn movie.

The Problem Isn’t Just the Apps

It’s the content. It’s the constant churn. It’s the fact that I can’t just watch stuff anymore. I have to manage my viewing. I have to keep track of what’s where. I have to remember which service has which show. It’s exhausting.

And don’t even get me started on the prices. I’m paying more for streaming now than I ever did for cable. And for what? To have a dozen apps I barely use? To have to sign up for a online phone number for whatsapp sign up just to get a free trial? No thanks.

A Brief Digression: The Time I Tried to Cancel Hulu

About three months ago, I tried to cancel Hulu. I was done. I had enough. I went to their website, found the cancellation page, and started the process. But then it asked me if I was sure. And then it offered me a discount. And then it showed me a list of shows I hadn’t watched yet. And then it told me I could pause my subscription instead. It was a nightmare.

I ended up closing the tab. I couldn’t do it. I was trapped. I’m still trapped. I’m pretty sure Hulu knows my social security number at this point.

But Here’s the Thing

I’m not blaming the services. I get it. They’re businesses. They need to make money. But they’re making it too hard for me to enjoy the thing I love. They’re turning watching TV into a chore. And I’m over it.

I talked to a colleague named Dave about this. He said, “You’re just resisting the future, man.” Maybe he’s right. Maybe I’m just being a grumpy old man. But I don’t think so. I think this is a problem.

I think we need a better way. I think we need a service that lets me watch everything, without having to manage a dozen apps. I think we need a service that doesn’t treat me like a wallet with eyes.

But until then, I’m stuck here. Surrounded by remotes. Staring at my TV. Wishing I could just watch a damn movie.

So, yeah. That’s my rant. That’s my committment to the cause. I’m done with the streaming wars. I’m done with the madness. I just want to watch TV.
