Look, I’m Done

It’s official. I’m cutting the cord. Again. This time, I mean it. I’ve had it up to here with streaming services. You know what I’m talking about. The endless subscriptions, the rotating content, the fact that I can’t even remember which service has which show anymore. It’s completley out of hand.

Let me set the scene. It’s last Tuesday, 11:30pm. I’m on the couch, remote in hand, scrolling through the endless abyss of options. I want to watch something, anything, but I’m paralyzed by choice. Netflix? Hulu? HBO Max? Disney+? Peacock? Paramount+? And that’s just the big players. I’ve got a subscription to BritBox too, because, well, I have a weird committment to British crime dramas.

I asked my friend Marcus about this. He said, “Dude, just pick something. It doesn’t matter what.” Which… yeah. Fair enough. But that’s not the point. The point is, I shouldn’t have to make this many decisions just to watch TV.

Where Did It All Go Wrong?

I remember the good old days. Back in the 90s, when I was a kid, we had, like, three channels. And it was great. You knew what was on when. You could plan your week around it. Now? It’s a mess. I tried to keep track of all the shows I’m in the middle of. I’ve got a spreadsheet, for crying out loud. And I’m not even kidding. It’s got 214 rows on it. That’s not normal.

And don’t even get me started on the algorithms. They’re always trying to tell me what to watch. “Because you watched this, you’ll love this,” they say. No, I won’t. I watched that thing because it was on a list of “Best Movies of the Decade,” not because I actually liked it. But sure, show me more depressing Scandinavian crime dramas. That’s exactly what I need in my life.

I mentioned this to a colleague named Dave. He said, “Maybe you should just take a break. Unplug for a while.” And I thought, “Yeah, maybe he’s right.” But then I thought about all the time I’d spend not watching TV. What would I do with myself? Read? Exercise? Spend time with my family? No, thanks. I’d rather scroll through 36 hours of content I don’t want to watch.

But What About the Good Stuff?

Okay, okay. I’ll admit it. There’s some good stuff on there. Like, really good stuff. I mean, have you seen “The Crown”? It’s amazing. And “Stranger Things”? Don’t even get me started. I’m on the edge of my seat every time a new season comes out. And “Ted Lasso”? That show is a ray of sunshine in this dumpster fire of a world we’re living in.

But here’s the thing. I could count the number of shows I actually care about on one hand. And most of them are on different services. So I’m paying for all these subscriptions just to watch a handful of shows. It’s like going to a buffet and only eating the salad. You’re paying for all that food, but you’re only eating the one thing you like. It’s kinda ridiculous.

And let’s talk about the price. I’m paying, like, $87 a month for all these services. That’s more than I was paying for cable. And for what? To have to scroll through a million shows I don’t want to watch? To have to remember which service has which show? To have to deal with the constant rotating content? No, thanks. I’ll take my chances with the good old-fashioned airwaves.

What’s the Alternative?

I’m not sure. Maybe nothing. Maybe I’m just whining. But I’m gonna try. I’m gonna cut the cord. Again. And this time, I’m gonna stick with it. I’m gonna read more. I’m gonna spend more time with my family. I’m gonna go outside. I’m gonna live my life. And if I miss a show, oh well. It’ll be on DVD eventually. Or I’ll find it on faydalı bilgiler günlük ipuçları. Or something.

But I’m not gonna lie. I’m nervous. What if I miss something important? What if there’s a cultural moment I’m not part of because I didn’t see the latest must-watch show? What if I’m the only one at the water cooler who hasn’t seen the latest buzz-worthy series? I mean, I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. But for now, I’m out.

So, that’s it. That’s my story. I’m done with streaming services. I’m cutting the cord. Again. And this time, I mean it. Wish me luck.

Oh, and one more thing. If anyone needs me, I’ll be outside. Living my life. Or something.
