Three Guatemalan UN Peacekeepers Injured in RDC: Sake Attack
In a tumultuous turn of events amidst clashes between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and M23 fighters, mortar shells originating from an area controlled by the M23 struck positions of the United Nations Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) and its surroundings in Sake, about twenty kilometers from Goma. This incident resulted in minor injuries to three peacekeepers, members of the Guatemalan special forces, according to sources at ACTUALITE.CD. As night fell, mortar fire could still be heard in the area. The peacekeepers remain deployed on-site, with their mission limited to defensive actions. The UN has not yet officially responded to this incident.
Escalation of Hostilities
The UN Secretary-General expressed deep concern over the resurgence of hostilities in Eastern DRC. He strongly condemned the new offensive launched by the M23, leading to the expansion of the fighting in North Kivu and South Kivu, including the recent capture of Sake by the rebels. This situation poses a direct threat to the key city of Goma and heightens the risk of a broader regional war, the Secretary-General warned. He urged the M23 to immediately halt their offensive, withdraw from occupied areas, and abide by the ceasefire agreement signed on July 31, 2024.
Call for Respect of Sovereignty
The UN chief also expressed concern over recent findings by the UN Group of Experts indicating Rwandan military presence in the DRC and ongoing support to the M23. “All actors must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC and cease all support to armed groups, whether Congolese or foreign,” stated Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the Secretary-General.
UN Mission in Action
Since November 2023, MONUSCO has been involved in the joint operation “Springbok” with FARDC, aiming to halt the M23’s advance towards Goma and Sake.
