Tips for Teens: Enjoying the Holidays Responsibly

In Kinshasa, as well as around the world, the end-of-year holidays are moments of joy, sharing, and celebration. However, they can also lead to regrettable decisions, especially for teenagers. Dr. Jean-Claude Mulunda, country director of the NGO Ipas and women’s rights activist, shared three essential tips to enjoy the holidays while staying responsible.

1. The Holidays are not the End All, Be All

Dr. Mulunda emphasizes that Christmas and New Year’s come around every year. If you can’t celebrate as you’d like this year, there will be other opportunities, probably next year. Wanting to celebrate beyond your means can lead to regrettable choices that will affect your future.

He warns against behaviors like stealing among boys or engaging in sex work among girls, often driven by social or financial pressure. These actions and choices during the holiday season can lead to trouble with the law, sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies, or even unsafe abortions with serious consequences for your health and future.

2. Protecting Yourself from Violence

Dr. Jean-Claude Mulunda highlights that holidays can sometimes be sources of tension and violence, especially in intimate relationships. If a boy feels diminished because he can’t give gifts, it can lead to violent behavior.

For girls, it’s important to protect yourself by avoiding dangerous situations and, in case of violence, having the courage to report the perpetrators. Reporting is a brave act that helps protect others and hold the perpetrators accountable.

3. What to Do in Case of Mistake?

For girls in particular, Dr. Mulunda suggests a solution. If a mistake is made, such as unprotected sex, it’s essential to act quickly. For example, find emergency contraception, available in pharmacies in the DRC, to be taken within a maximum of 72 hours to avoid unwanted pregnancy. However, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections or HIV. For that, using a condom is essential.

In case of unwanted pregnancy, the doctor recommends consulting trained healthcare providers who offer safe services approved by the Ministry of Health and the WHO. A safe abortion is less risky than an unsafe abortion. In conclusion, holidays are meant to celebrate, not to compromise your future. Enjoy in moderation, make informed choices, and always protect yourself.
