Massive Population Displacement in Kahira, Busoro, and Buhimba
In the heart of the Bashali chiefdom, violent clashes erupted on Thursday, January 2, 2025, between the M23 rebels and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC), supported by local armed groups. These confrontations have spread to several villages, including Kahira, Busoro, and Buhimba, as reported by local civilians on the ground. The tension is palpable as the Congolese army and armed groups strive to dislodge the M23 rebels from these areas.
Exodus of Displaced Populations
In the wake of escalating violence, a massive exodus of populations has been witnessed. Residents are fleeing the battles, seeking refuge in Kahira, as well as in Kalembe and Kalonge, in the neighboring territory of Walikale. Telesphore Mithondekere, a spokesperson for the local civil society in Masisi, highlighted the impact of the rebel attacks on the displacement of residents. The presence of rebels has instilled fear and prompted the mass movement of inhabitants from their homes.
Uncertain Situation in Sake
The situation in Sake, within the Kamuronza group, remains highly unpredictable. Following two days of intense fighting between the M23/RDF rebels and the Congolese army, supported by both local and foreign partners, the local population is gripped by fear and uncertainty. Despite some semblance of peace in certain frontline areas like Nyiragongo, Masisi, and Lubero on this Thursday, the overall atmosphere remains tense and volatile.
Josué Mutanava, reporting from Goma, sheds light on the dire circumstances faced by the affected populations. As the conflict intensifies and displaces individuals from their homes, the urgent need for humanitarian aid and intervention becomes increasingly apparent. The resilience and courage displayed by those caught in the midst of violence serve as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict. In times of turmoil, it is crucial for communities to come together, support one another, and advocate for peace to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals affected by such tragic events.
