Clashes between FARDC and M23 in Masisi: Resumption of fighting this Sunday in Mupfuni Shanga groupement, several localities liberated by loyalist forces
The conflict between the elements of the M23/RDF coalition and the FARDC, supported by local fighters known as “Wazalendo,” has reignited early this Sunday, January 5, 2025, on multiple axes in the Mupfuni Shanga groupement, located in the Masisi territory in North Kivu.
**Loyalist Forces Pursue M23/RDF Elements**
According to Jean de Dieu Barakimwa, the president of the new Congolese civil society in the Mupfuni Shanga groupement, loyalist forces continue to hunt down M23/RDF elements beyond the strategic hill of Ndumba. The M23/RDF members were dislodged from Ndumba after several months of resistance. Barakimwa reported ongoing clashes in the hills overlooking Bweremana, with calm prevailing in Bweremana-center. Activities are proceeding normally in the area, although the sounds of heavy gunfire can be heard from the heights of Ndumba towards Kashingamutwe and specifically at Kalenga.
**Successful Liberation of Localities**
On Saturday, loyalist forces successfully reclaimed several localities in the highlands of the Mupfuni Shanga groupement. Despite retaliatory actions from M23/RDF elements, a zone clearance operation continued into the morning.
**Intense Fighting in Various Locations**
Intense clashes between the M23/RDF coalition and local fighters “Wazalendo” resumed on Saturday afternoon on the Katale-Masisi-center axis passing through Lushebere. This came after a brief lull in the fighting. Lushebere and Masisi-center fell under M23 terrorists’ control following a strategic withdrawal by loyalist forces to prevent civilian casualties.

Faced with the superior firepower of loyalist forces, M23 terrorists bombed the town of Bweremana. Local civil society reported at least two deaths and six injuries among civilians.
