US Embassy in Kinshasa Closes Amidst Rising Violence: Urges American Citizens to Depart Safely via Commercial Flights
In a stark response to the escalating violence in the Congolese capital, the US Embassy in Kinshasa has taken the unprecedented step of closing its doors to the public until further notice. The embassy has issued a call to American citizens, urging them to leave the country “while commercial options remain available,” emphasizing that N’Djili Airport remains operational amidst the chaos.
“We encourage American citizens to depart via commercial flights when they feel they can safely make their way to the airport,” the embassy stated in a press release. However, they also caution against roadblocks and demonstrations that could disrupt access to the airport. In light of these developments, the embassy advises its citizens to remain prepared by packing essential items such as clothing, medication, and travel documents. Additionally, they recommend avoiding gatherings, monitoring local media, and maintaining a low profile to ensure safety.
Protests Erupt Outside Multiple Embassies
The closure of the US Embassy comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions in Kinshasa, where demonstrations have targeted several diplomatic missions. In front of the US Embassy, tires were set ablaze, and a heavy police presence was reported to contain the crowd. Similar incidents occurred outside the embassies of France, Belgium, and Rwanda.
French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, condemned these attacks, labeling them as “unacceptable.” The Congolese government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed regret for these incidents, assuring that “all practical measures are being taken to ensure the protection of diplomatic missions, their personnel, and property.”
Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds in the East of the Country
Meanwhile, in Goma, located in the eastern part of the DRC, the situation remains dire. Clashes between the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and the M23 rebels persist, particularly around the airport and the main barrier at the border with Rwanda. These confrontations have led to significant population displacements and substantial loss of life.
Hospitals in Goma, such as Heal Africa, continue to receive casualties, including civilians wounded by shrapnel or stray bullets. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has also decried the looting of its medical warehouse, highlighting the critical nature of these supplies for the survival of the wounded.
As tensions continue to mount in Kinshasa and violence ravages the east of the country, the need for swift and decisive action to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens, both local and international, has never been more pressing. The closure of the US Embassy serves as a stark reminder of the fragile state of affairs in the DRC, underscoring the importance of diplomacy, humanitarian aid, and international cooperation in times of crisis.
