Police Officer Killed and Woman Seriously Injured in Tragic Goma Shooting

A tragic incident unfolded in Goma as a member of the Congolese National Police (PNC) and a woman were shot, leaving one dead and the other critically injured. The deceased has been identified as Major Havugimana Buzaiire Christophe, the commander of Ciat Lac Vert, while the seriously injured woman is named Mukankunsi Ngiramahirwe Venasia. The shooting took place around 00:40 on Kalondji Avenue in the Ndihira cell, Ndosho district.

Unclear Circumstances Surrounding the Incident

According to reports from the civil society of the Karisimbi commune, details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, necessitating a thorough investigation. Christian Kalamo, the president of the civil society in the Karisimbi commune, expressed concerns about the unchecked circulation of weapons in the city and called for an end to the state of siege, citing a failure to bring peace to the region.

Kalamo emphasized the need for a comprehensive census of all Goma residents to identify each individual and urged the population to report any suspicious activity. He stressed the importance of vigilance within the community, stating, “The enemy is always among us.”

Recent Arrests and Ongoing Security Concerns

The civil society also disclosed that three suspected criminals, including a military member from the “Satan2” unit and two civilians, were apprehended approximately two hours before the shooting in the same neighborhood. These individuals were caught in a house during security patrols and subsequently detained by PNC authorities in Karisimbi.

The body of the deceased police officer has been transferred to the morgue at the CBCA hospital in Ndosho, while the injured woman is receiving treatment at the same medical facility. The civil society condemned the senseless act of violence and called on relevant authorities to implement immediate measures to enhance security in Ndosho and bolster PNC presence in the region. Notably, a similar tragic shooting occurred in the area the previous week, resulting in additional casualties.
