The reconstruction of the Central Purchasing of Essential Medicines of Kisangani (CAMEKIS) started on Thursday, May 15, 2025, near the Makiso General Reference Hospital. CAMEKIS is the biggest pharmaceutical warehouse in the province. An unknown fire had destroyed it on August 5, 2024. Almost 10 months later, the building will be rebuilt. The construction will take ten months and is funded by CAMEKIS asbl. They are building a two-story building with a total area of 505.40 m². It will include an warehouse, administrative offices, a meeting room, a large hall, a waiting room, an archive room, and more.
Madame Amisi Jeanne, speaking on behalf of the CAMEKIS board of directors, mentioned the serious impact of the fire on patient treatments. She also highlighted the lack of prevention measures despite support from the Global Fund. The provincial authority, on behalf of the CAMEKIS board chairperson, urged the company ElK La Couronne to strictly adhere to contractual standards and deadlines. They also called on CAMEKIS leaders to ensure the proper execution of the project while incorporating effective fire prevention measures. The Provincial Governor, Provincial Deputies, government health partners, and other dignitaries attended the ceremony. The fire at the Central Purchasing of Essential Medicines in Kisangani in August 2024 occurred at 4 a.m. This warehouse supplies all 23 health zones in Tshopo and some in the Maniema province.
The reconstruction of CAMEKIS is a significant step towards restoring essential medical supplies to the region. The fire that devastated the warehouse had severe consequences on the healthcare system, affecting the treatment of patients across the province. The involvement of various stakeholders, including government officials, highlights the importance of this project in ensuring the availability of medicines and medical supplies. Despite the challenges faced during the rebuilding process, the commitment to completing the project underscores the resilience of the community in overcoming adversity. As work progresses on the new facility, there is hope for improved healthcare services and better preparedness for future emergencies. The reconstruction of CAMEKIS symbolizes a new beginning for healthcare delivery in Kisangani and surrounding areas.
