Remembering Mamadou Ndala: A Hero in the Midst of the M23 War
On Thursday, January 2, 2025, marks the 11th anniversary of the tragic death of Colonel Mamadou Ndala, an officer in the Rapid Reaction Unit (URR) known for his courageous fight against the M23 rebellion in Goma and North Kivu from 2012 to 2013.
Marion Ngavo Kambale, president of the urban coordination of the civil society of Goma, still remembers the “people’s fighter.” “He had been sent here to North Kivu to fight the M23 and ADF, unfortunately, he was killed. Through this sad anniversary, we believe that other military commanders on the front lines fighting against the M23 should emulate Mamadou Ndala’s behavior, model, and way of doing things. He was determined, avoided corruption, and his goal was to protect the population by neutralizing armed groups,” Marion Ngavo shared with ACTUALITE.CD.
Reflecting on Ndala’s legacy, Marion added: “We must remember Mamadou Ndala’s determination. He was a leader of men, and through his determination, he inspired bravery in all his troops, resulting in success in all military operations. Another characteristic of Mamadou was his sincerity and his desire to improve his work. We hope for victory against the M23 rebels. These qualities should define us all, whether civilians in leadership roles, officers, or politicians.”
Colonel Mamadou Ndala: A Brief Biography
Mamadou Mustafa Ndala was born in Ibambi, Wamba territory, on December 8, 1978, and grew up in a practicing Muslim family. He began his military career with the AFDL in June 1997 and later joined the MLC of JP Bemba in 1999. Ndala’s leadership was recognized as he led successful offensives against the M23 rebels in Goma. After his triumph over the M23, Ndala was tasked with combating the ADF armed group in Beni, known for atrocities against civilians. Tragically, on January 2, 2014, an ambush took his life and that of three of his bodyguards.
Mamadou Ndala was buried in Kinshasa on January 6, 2014, hailed as a hero for his role in the fight against the M23 rebellion, which restored the honor of the FARDC in North Kivu.
