International Peace Conference in DRC Supported by Mukwege and CENCO-ECC: A Path to Peace
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 2018, Denis Mukwege, has thrown his weight behind the joint initiative of the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) and the Church of Christ in Congo (ECC). These organizations have put forth a roadmap proposing a social pact for peace and harmonious living in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes region. This initiative comes in response to the profound suffering, loss of life, sexual violence, and forced displacement that have plagued the region.
Support for a Peaceful Solution
During a press conference on November 29, 2023, in Bukavu, Denis Mukwege emphasized the urgent need for a new approach to resolving the ongoing conflicts in the region. He highlighted the failure of past security, political, and diplomatic efforts and called for a revitalization of the Addis Ababa Framework Agreement. Additionally, he advocated for the convening of an international peace conference within the country’s borders.
Religious Organizations Join Forces
Mukwege echoed the sentiments expressed by the CENCO and ECC, stating, “We lend our voice to the Call for Peace from the National Episcopal Conference of Congo and the Presidency of the Church of Christ in Congo, religious denominations representing a significant portion of the Congolese population.” He stressed the existential threat facing the nation and the stagnation of current security and diplomatic initiatives.
Key Recommendations for Peace
The religious organizations outlined key steps necessary to ensure the success of the proposed social pact. These include prioritizing consensus-building through traditional dialogue methods, fostering unity while respecting diversity, and urging African leaders to embrace this socio-spiritual initiative. They also called on the international community to support African nations in their pursuit of justice, peace, and sustainable development.
Path Towards a Peaceful Future
Looking ahead, CENCO and ECC plan to establish thematic commissions focused on peace and harmonious living. These commissions will delve into various topics through workshops, culminating in the creation of a national charter for peace and harmonious living. This will set the stage for an upcoming National Forum and an International Conference for Peace, Co-Development, and Harmonious Living in the Great Lakes region.
In the meantime, the religious organizations will engage with key national and international stakeholders to garner support for their peacebuilding efforts. Their ultimate goal is to usher in a new era of peaceful coexistence in the DRC and the broader Great Lakes region.
By coming together and embracing a unified vision for peace, the people of the region can pave the way for a brighter future filled with hope and prosperity for generations to come.
