Dance as a Tool for Change: Empowering Gender Equality through Movement
In a groundbreaking initiative to promote gender equality through the power of dance, the Congolese artistic and cultural company Likit’Arts Kongo has launched a project titled “Bouger pour changer” (“Move to Change”). This project, initially started in 2023, has been revitalized with the support of the Build Together Initiative and the French Embassy in the DRC, which recently awarded it a grant of 10,000 Euros in December.
Empowering Artistic Expression
At the helm of this transformative project is Jackson Lohanga, the Director of Likit’Arts Kongo, who is dedicated to fostering creative and cultural development in the DRC. By establishing strong partnerships with external entities, Lohanga aims to expand the reach of the project and make a lasting impact on the local arts scene. Expressing his gratitude for the grant, Lohanga emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting initiatives that contribute to sustainable development in the country.
Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion
Under the theme of “Bouger pour changer,” dance takes center stage as a powerful medium for conveying essential messages about Congolese society and its realities. Throughout January and February, participating artists are focusing on exploring gender-related issues through their performances. Choreographers interested in joining the project were invited to submit their applications starting on January 1, with the deadline set for January 7. The selection process, including auditions, project presentations, and training sessions, will culminate in a series of captivating performances scheduled for February 9-10 in Kinshasa.
Transforming Society through Movement
Through “Bouger pour changer,” the art of dance becomes a vehicle for conveying vital social messages, transcending cultural and tribal barriers to resonate with audiences on a universal level. Jackson Lohanga firmly believes in the transformative power of art to reflect and address the social realities of Congolese society. The ultimate goal of this ambitious project is to create compelling performances that mirror the diverse and complex fabric of the local community, driving positive change through the unifying language of dance.
In a world where words may fail to bridge divides, dance emerges as a universal language that speaks to the heart of human experience. Through the collective efforts of artists, cultural enthusiasts, and supporters of gender equality, “Bouger pour changer” stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment, showcasing the profound impact of art in fostering social change and inclusivity. As we witness the transformative power of movement and creativity, let us join hands in celebrating the beauty of diversity and the strength of unity through the art of dance.
