Health Services Suspended in 7 Health Zones in Mangurejipa (Lubero) due to ADF Attacks

In a disturbing turn of events, health services have been suspended in seven health zones in Mangurijipa, located in the Lubero territory of North Kivu, due to escalating insecurity at the beginning of this year. The situation has worsened following deadly attacks by ADF fighters, who have even targeted certain healthcare facilities, according to Dr. Martial Kambumbu, the chief medical officer of the health zone and former provincial health minister of North Kivu.

Residents Fleeing Attacks Seek Refuge in Mangurejipa-Center

Residents fleeing the attacked areas are now seeking refuge in Mangurejipa-center, where medical care is facing several challenges. Dr. Kambumbu reported that several health zones have been forced to cease operations due to rebel assaults, including Akwele, Mabuo, and Kisange, which are all bordering the provinces of Ituri and Tshopo. Additionally, the health zones of Ombole, Bandulu, Midede, and Liboyo are also on the list, with most residents no longer present in these areas.

Urgent Appeal for Humanitarian Assistance

Dr. Kambumbu expressed concern over the gradual deaths of displaced individuals due to lack of adequate medical care. He also warned of a potential epidemic outbreak and issued a plea to humanitarian organizations to assist the displaced population. The absence of humanitarian aid has hindered their daily work significantly, as the displaced individuals’ ability to contribute to their medical care is nearly non-existent due to extreme poverty.

Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds Amid Rising Death Toll

Between September and October 2024, at least 15 community deaths have been recorded, according to health authorities. The ADF rebels have attacked and killed dozens of civilians in the vicinity of Mangurejipa over the past six months, seizing the opportunity to loot healthcare facilities. Several health centers in the area, such as the center in Akwele, have been vandalized, with the attackers damaging the vaccine refrigerator.

As the situation in Mangurijipa continues to deteriorate, urgent humanitarian intervention is required to address the escalating health crisis and provide essential medical support to the vulnerable population. The plight of those affected by the ADF attacks highlights the critical need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of those caught in the crossfire.
