In a bold move to address the rising urban crime in Lubumbashi, Governor Jacques Kyabula Katwe of Haut-Katanga province has announced stringent measures to tackle the issue head-on. Incidents of violence have been on the rise in the city known for its copper production, prompting the provincial executive to take action. The new measure, a curfew, will go into effect starting this Monday, running from midnight to 5 a.m.
Unveiling the Curfew
Governor Kyabula made the announcement during a rally in support of the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Saturday. Standing alongside Michel Kabwe Muamba, President of the Provincial Assembly of Haut-Katanga, and hundreds of supporters from various political parties, Governor Kyabula emphasized the need to curb urban crime for the safety and security of the residents.
“We have taken steps to address urban crime in Lubumbashi. Starting this Monday, we are implementing a curfew across the entire city. From midnight to 5 a.m., we will know who is out late, where they are going, and what they are doing at these late hours,” stated Governor Kyabula.
